What if you life is turned upside down in an instant?
I decided for my next couple of blogs to focus on different topics and then see how I can relate those somehow to marketing. We shall see how this goes.
In this blog I am featuring one of my business partner’s Due Guard Security. The two men that own this business are veterans I have know for a few years. On The Level Marketing supports the Veterans of this great country and I am very proud to be able to feature their business in this months Blog. The information for this blog came from Dwayne Hoyt, one of the Owner’s of Due Guard Security.
What if…you were out shopping, at a park enjoying the nice day, or at work and found yourself in an active shooter situation. What would you do? Do you know what to do? Unfortunately, in this day and age, it is a very real possibility this can happen to you. I have asked Dwayne to provide me some of the key points on how to be prepared for an active shooter situation.
I recently sat in on one of Due Guard Security’s Active Shooter training programs. It was an eye opening experience. They show two different videos simulating an active shooter situation. I remember thinking how close to reality could this be. It was very close to how I would perceive what one of these situations would actually be like. It had my heart pumping.
The course goes over the following:
- Respond: What would you do?
- Prepare: Self assessment, indicators of workplace violence.
- Follow up: Summary and post event actions.
As I mentioned, you watch two videos. The first video is of an active shooter situation in a school. It was probably the most intense of the two videos, not that the other wasn’t intense. You quickly get in mind set of what I can only imagine is remotely similar frame to that of the Law Enforcement Officers mind when they get into this type of situation. One has to make literally split second decisions, or die. You don’t realize, AT ALL, how quickly one needs to make decisions in this type of situation, with the goal being getting people to safety and finding the shooter.
The second video is of an active shooter situation in a couple of different settings: out in a park and in an office situation. The settings are quite a different than the school setting, but not any less intense. This second video, though, goes through specific steps on how to protect yourself and remove yourself quickly from the situation. It also addresses how to protect yourself, if at the very worse case, you can’t get out of the situation. All very important information to make certain you come out of an active shooter situation as quickly and safely as possible.
So, as a business owner, are you prepared for the What If? It doesn’t matter if your business is you and your computer sitting at the local coffee shop, park, or in a retail space with employees. You need to have a plan on what you would do in this situation. It, sadly, is a fact of life these days.
So, like a business needs a marketing plan, a business needs an emergency plan. That plan can be for a number of reasons. It can be weather related (flood and/or wind damage), fire related, or security related. It can encompass what if the power is out for an unspecified time? Do you have a plan for these or others not mentioned.
So, what if…?
